As planned, the second installation of News Pro has been successfully completed for Seminole, Texas. Located between Brownfield and Hobbs, Seminole is home to population of more than 6,000 residents. The newspaper itself had hosted a web site for some time, but was never able to go beyond posting pdf's for download.
The previous site used traditional HTML files for news content and was not able to utilize a subscriber based system for paid content and especially not advertising. Thankfully, JAWS Media's installation of News Pro now allows subscribers to get instant access to select content in a matter of minutes and add news as well as adtertising managment as well!
As is the case with News Pro, most clients experience instant subscribers. It shows the pent up demand for web based content that has not been served when this occurs. News Pro makes it happen! However, posting news content on the web is like adding a new segment to your business.
It takes time to build your subscriber base and get it to generate revenue. At the recommendation of JAWS Media, Seminole, like Brownfield, charges an annual rate for online subscriptions. The question always arises, "how can you charge when so many web sites give it away?"
Newspapers bet on making up the revenue lost by not charging an online sub by banking ad sales. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the average newspaper. Once readers find they can get the news for free online, many drop their print subscription.
This is not the goal of adding this segment to your business, you are supplementing, not taking away from your print edition. In time, users become accustomed to this charge and think nothing of paying for the subscription.
As demand for this type of service increases, these subs will actually become revenue generators that more than pay for the service as they cost less than traditional printing. Seminole is now planning how to incorporate their new found web presence through online sales.
"This is a giant step forward for this publication to reach a new market and to allow for our current readers to keep up-to-date with happenings in Seminole and Gaines County," said Dustin Wright, Sentinel Managing Editor.
"The luxury of having a website with the ability to present news articles immediately following events is amazing," said Wright. "It allows for smaller publications like ourselves to stand on the same level as the larger regional publications and news outlets."
We'll keep you posted on both Brownfield and Seminole and identify those success factors which work for each newspaper for online ad sales. Check out their web site and get a closer look at how their using News Pro. |
